
The Ice Man, legendary soul singer Jerry Butler, known for hits like “For Your Precious Love” and “Only the Strong Survive,” has died at 85. Butler, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and former Cook County board commissioner, was a key figure in both Chicago and Philadelphia soul music.
Jerry Butler, a premier soul singer of the 1960s whose rich, intimate baritone graced such hits as “Ain’t Understanding Mellow,” “Hey, Western Union Man,” and “Make It Easy On Yourself” and many more.
He was also an advocate for musicians’ rights, serving as chairman of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation while maintaining a decades-long political career. To many the voice of Jerry Butler will not be forgotten- the vocal memories will last forever.
