Geoffrey Starks, FCC Commissioner has announced his resignation, set to take effect this spring, marking the end of his impactful tenure which began in 2019. His departure was formally addressed in a letter to President Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
In a statement, Commissioner Starks reflected on his service, saying, “Serving the American people as a Commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission has been the honor of my life. With my extraordinary fellow Commissioners and the incredible career staff at the agency, we have worked hard to connect all Americans, promote innovation, protect consumers, and ensure national security.”
Throughout his time at the FCC, Starks has been a vocal advocate for broadband expansion, digital equity, and strengthening cybersecurity policies. His efforts have consistently focused on consumer protection and bridging the digital divide.
Starks expressed gratitude for the insights gained through direct interactions with the public, stating, “I have learned so much from my time in this position, particularly when I have heard directly from Americans on the issues that matter to them. I have been inspired by the passion, engagement, and commitment I have seen from colleagues, advocates, and industry.”
He has committed to remaining actively involved in his duties until his resignation, working closely with FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and fellow Commissioners to further the agency’s goals.
Reacting to the news, Chairman Carr praised Starks for his dedication and service. “He has had a tremendous run in public service. From senior leadership roles at the Department of Justice and in the Commission’s own Enforcement Bureau to serving as the Senior Democrat on the Federal Communications Commission, the American people have benefited greatly from Commissioner Starks’ public service,” Carr said.
Carr also highlighted Starks’ leadership on national security initiatives and his collaborative efforts on various agency matters. “I always learned a lot from him and benefited from the many events we held together,” he added.
Carr extended his best wishes to Starks, his wife Lauren, and their children, looking forward to maintaining their friendship beyond Starks’ public service.
